    Protective Effects of Japanese Soybean Paste (Miso) on Stroke in Stroke-Prone Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats (SHRSP)

    [BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS] Soybean isoflavones have been shown to reduce the risk of cerebral infarction in humans according to epidemiological studies. However, whether intake of miso can reduce the incidence of stroke in animal models remains unknown. In this study, we investigated the effects of soybean paste (miso) in an animal model of stroke. [METHODS] Stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP) were fed a miso diet (normal diet 90%, miso 10%; final NaCl content 2.8%), a high salt diet (normal diet and NaCl 2.5%; final NaCl content 2.8%), or a low salt diet (normal diet; final NaCl content 0.3%). [RESULTS] Kaplan–Meier survival curves revealed a significantly lower survival rate in the high salt group compared to the miso group (P = 0.002) and the low salt group (P ≀ 0.001). Large hemorrhagic macules were found in the cerebrum in the high salt group, whereas none were found in the other 2 groups. There were also fewer histological and immunohistochemical changes in the brain and kidneys in the miso group compared to the high salt group. [CONCLUSION] Our results suggest that miso may have protective effects against stroke despite its high salt content.This work was supported by a grant-in-aid from the Central Miso Institute, Tokyo, Japa

    A memory-based programmable logic device using look-up table cascade with synchronous static random access memories

    A large-scale memory-technology-based programmable logic device (PLD) using LUT (Look-Up Table) cascade is developed in 0.35um Standard CMOS logic process. Eight 64K-bit synchronous SRAMs are connected to form an LUT cascade with a few additional circuits. The features of the LUT cascade include: 1) flexible cascade connection structure, 2) multi-phase pseudo-asynchronous operations with synchronous SRAM cores, 3) LUT-bypass redundancy. This chip operates at 33MHz in 8-LUT cascades with 122mW. Benchmark results show that it achieves a comparable performance to FPGAs

    Abstract Main Problems In non‐small‐cell lung cancer, ground‐glass opacity on computed tomography imaging reflects pathological noninvasiveness and is a favorable prognostic factor. However, the significance of pathological noninvasive areas (NIAs) has not been fully revealed. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the prognostic impact of NIAs on lung adenocarcinoma. Methods We analyzed 402 patients with pathological stage (p‐Stage) IA lung adenocarcinoma who underwent surgery in 2013–2016 at two institutions and examined the association of the presence of NIAs with clinicopathological factors and prognosis. Furthermore, after using propensity‐score matching to adjust for clinicopathological factors, such as age, sex, smoking history, pathological invasive area size, pathological T factor (p‐T), p‐Stage, and histological subtype (lepidic predominant adenocarcinoma [LPA] or non‐LPA), the prognostic impact of NIAs was evaluated. Results Patients were divided into NIA‐present (N = 231) and NIA‐absent (N = 171) groups. Multivariable analysis showed that NIA‐present was strongly associated with earlier p‐T, earlier p‐Stage, LPA, and epidermal growth factor receptor mutation. Kaplan–Meier survival analysis showed that the NIA‐present group displayed a better prognosis than the NIA‐absent group in disease‐free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) (5‐year DFS 94.6% vs. 87.2%, 5‐year OS 97.2% vs. 91.1%). However, after adjusting for clinicopathological factors by propensity score matching, no significant differences in prognosis were identified between the NIA‐present and NIA‐absent groups (5‐year DFS 92.4% vs 89.6%, 5‐year OS 95.6% vs 94.3%). Conclusions Our current study suggests that the prognostic impact of the presence of NIAs on lung adenocarcinoma is due to differences in clinicopathological factors

    Collision of advanced gastric adenocarcinoma and gastrointestinal stromal tumour: a case report

    We present a case of an 83-year-old female patient with a collision tumour of an advanced Borrmann type 4 gastric cancer and a large gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST). According to the deformity of the gastric wall caused by the GIST, type 4 cancer was difficult to identify by oesophagogastroduodenoscopy (OGD). The patient died of progressive gastric cancer related disease. While the mechanism of histogenesis of the simultaneous adenocarcinoma and GIST remains to be determined, the present case suggests that gastric adenocarcinoma has a more adverse effect on prognosis than does GIST. Additionally, this case suggests that thorough inspection of GIST patients is required at the OGD and at the pathology facility, in order to avoid overlooking the underlying cancer

    Clinical significance of mechanistic target of rapamycin expression in vessels that encapsulate tumor cluster‐positive hepatocellular carcinoma patients who have undergone living donor liver transplantation

    Abstract Background There is limited published information regarding the expression of mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) in vessels that encapsulate tumor cluster (VETC)‐positive hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The mTOR inhibitor, everolimus, has been approved as an immunosuppressant for use in HCC patients after living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). Methods Using a database of 214 patients who underwent LDLT for HCC, we examined the mTOR protein and angiopoietin‐2 (Ang‐2) in VETC‐positive HCC by immunohistochemical staining. The presence of VETC and mTOR expression were evaluated in both primary and recurrent HCC lesions. Results Forty‐three of the 214 patients (20.1%) were VETC‐positive, and 29 of these 43 patients (67.4%) expressed mTOR. Relative Ang‐2 expression was significantly higher in the mTOR‐positive than in the mTOR‐negative group (p = 0.037). Thirty‐four of the 214 patients experienced HCC recurrence after LDLT; 20 of these were operable. The primary lesions of six of these 20 patients were VETC‐positive; five of these six patients also had VETC‐positive recurrent lesions (p < 0.001). The expression of mTOR was significantly higher in the VETC‐positive lesions (p = 0.0018). Conclusions We showed that mTOR expression was higher in the VETC‐positive primary and recurrent lesions than in the VETC‐negative ones

    Primary intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma with sarcomatous stroma: case report and review of the literature

    Abstract Background Hepatic carcinosarcomas, which include both carcinomatous and sarcomatous elements, are uncommon in adults. Although carcinosarcoma in hepatocellular carcinoma is occasionally reported, carcinosarcoma in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) is an extremely rare ICC variant. Few such cases have been reported in English and no large study of its clinicopathological features exists. Case presentation Here, we report a 60-year-old man with an asymptomatic hepatic B infection who developed hepatic carcinosarcoma from an otherwise normal liver. The 6.0-cm tumor was accidentally discovered by PET-CT in a cancer examination. Serum examinations showed no elevation of tumor markers. He underwent left and caudate lobectomy of the liver. The diagnosis of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma with sarcomatous stroma was based on thorough pathologic examination and immunohistochemical staining. The tumor exhibited adenocarcinomatous and sarcomatous components; the adenocarcinomatous element was positive for epithelial markers, the sarcomatous element was positive for mesenchymal markers, but negative for epithelial markers. The patient made an uneventful recovery after surgery. At present, 14 months after surgery, he remains well with no evidence of tumor recurrence. Conclusions We report an unusual case of hepatic carcinosarcoma (intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma with sarcomatous stroma) and discuss the etiology and prognosis of this rare disease
